NES Sophomore Slump
I know this is not a new observation, but the original Nintendo Entertainment System was home to the firsts of a number of successful franchises, but it was also home to some weird, black sheep entries in those franchises, most of which were the second games in their series. I don’t know what was happening at Nintendo at the time, but they seemed to believe that if you make a really...

Author Publishes Book That Uses Zelda As A Means... →
I don’t think I’ll be picking this up anytime soon, but I can certainly see where one might draw a connection between the two mythologies.

Review - Star Wars: Republic Commando (Xbox, 2005)
Star Wars: Republic Commando is a squad-based, first-person shooter set during the Clone Wars period of the Star Wars universe. You play as the leader of an elite, four-man squad of clone trooper commandos, tasked with pulling off a number of small missions outside the purview of anything covered in the movies. The visuals were fantastic, the shooting action was fast and smooth, and commanding...

Review - Final Fantasy VI (SNES, 1994)
Final Fantasy VI (released as Final Fantasy III in the U.S.) was the third of a trio of Final Fantasy games for the SNES (the middle one was not released in the U.S.), and, combined with Chrono Trigger, is often considered the high-water mark for 16-bit RPGs. While it initially impressed me with great visuals, memorable music, and interesting story elements, the second half of the game fell...

I haven’t posted any reviews for a while, because I haven’t finished any games for a while, and most everything I am playing right now is kinda long (or difficult). But I do plan to finish Final Fantasy VI this weekend, and maybe I’ll also get through Parasite Eve or Abe’s Oddysee over the next week. So look for those reviews soon.

thelunaticinyourhead asked: I agree with your last post about older games and graphics. I know there has always been a competition for "better" graphics, but I think more recent games are focusing more heavily on graphics than actual content. There are very few brand new games that I have bought for the new consoles that I'm more than just satisfied with. I enjoy more of my older games than my new ones,...

Nerds and Male Privilege (via @Kotaku) →
This is a really great article on white male privilege in geek culture. It has a problem or two, I’m sure, but it is a remarkably intelligent and thorough examination of the issue of privilege and the fervent way male geeks deny it.

Fan Art: Zelda's Post-Apocalyptic Future Is... →
The Legend of Zelda is set in idyllic Hyrule. But what if things in Hyrule weren’t so pastoral? What if Zelda was set in the future and all of Hyrule had gone to shit? Then it might look something like this.
