Empty Wallet Gamer: Viewtiful Joe (Gamecube)... →
emptywalletgamer: -Shawn Trautman Viewtiful Joe is a side-scrolling, beat-em-up action game with cell-shaded visuals and a distinctly Japanese worldview. It is fast, frenetic, and balls-hard, even on the lower difficulty setting.  EWG picked up my Viewtiful Joe review.  Let us know what you think.

Sega wants your Graffiti
galaxynextdoor: Sega, in an awesome move has a contest where your graffiti could land in the upcoming HD remake of the much love Jet Set Radio. Now that’s some seriously cool marketing; graffiti for a game with graffiti. Seems legit. Via: Sega

killscreendaily: Our friends over at Mr. Gif devised this simple illustration from a quote from the great Dr. Einstein. As a writer about games, I worry that we value encyclopedic knowledge about what games are what rather than what games are.  -Jamin Warren [via Mr. Gif]

Empty Wallet Gamer: Limbo Review →
emptywalletgamer: -Calvin Tomlinson Limbo is one of the most intriguing games I’ve played in the past few years. The description on Limbo’s steam page simply says “Uncertain of his sister’s fate, a boy enters LIMBO” and honestly, I think that helps to make the game as fantastic as it is. This is near the top of my to-play list.  Check out Calvin’s review and let him know how you feel.

Game Journalism has no Place for Criticism →
This piece by Douglas Stewart talks about the difference between games journalism and criticism, and the uses for both.  I tend to lean heavily in favor of criticism with what I do, although I also do traditional reviews, which fall under the purview of journalism.  My favorite quote from the article: Videogames, like film and media, deserve to be studied, discussed and explored in the same...

Empty Wallet Gamer: Killzone 3 Review →
emptywalletgamer: -Keith Michael Killzone 3 is a sequel to a sequel of a game that was originally on the Playstation 2; I’m talking about Killzone. I tried playing Killzone when it had first come out for the Playstation 2 and I hated it. For starters, the gameplay was completely different than the shooter…

Academic Scholarship for Women in Gaming →
teal-deer: I wish that this had been around when I was an undergraduate, because I would have been far more likely to have stuck to my original plan (get a dual major in mathematics and computer science with a minor in art; go on to a graduate program in game design of some sort) than what I actually did do. This being the case, I’m here to spread the word. Check it, ladies.  This is...

dropouthangoutspaceout: Mathew Kumar on the sad state of the videogame enthusiast press. “We Are All Trapped In The Belly Of This Horrible Machine And The Machine Is Bleeding To Death.” Why had I not heard about this already? This is worth a listen even if you care very little about videogames - as it deals indirectly with the problems associated with journalism as a whole. What Kumar teases...

The Narrative vs. Mechanics Circus →
Wow.  This incredibly long and detailed piece takes all of the recent discussions (such as this and this) regarding what is or is not a game mechanic and what “narrative” means in games, and tries to make sense of it all, and in the process gives us a pretty good snapshot of the current state of the arguments.  Nicely done.

Metroid Prime's Magic Moments →
Here, the writer describes three moments from Metroid Prime that blew him away.  I love this game so desperately, and welcome any opportunity to talk about it. Don’t worry, though, just because he is describing three specific moments in the game, there are no real spoilers - they are more about the environments themselves.

The Problem with Games.... Is gamers.
